One of the smallest men’s sports leagues in the NCAA, ice hockey is offered across multiple conferences at the Division 1 and 3 level, with only a single conference of seven schools, the Northeast-10 Conference, making up the Division 2 level. Outside of the NCAA, men’s college hockey is also played at NAIA institutions.

There are 93 colleges and universities that sponsor women's ice hockey in two divisions: National Collegiate and Division III. National Collegiate. As of the current 2021–22 season, 41 teams compete in the National Collegiate division (commonly referred to as Division I). All of them play in five conferences: College Hockey America (CHA)
